Valentine's Day

What should I get my girlfriend for Valentine's Day?

Get her something that matches her taste, with a short note saying why you picked it. One really good chocolate bar in the flavor she'd choose herself says more than a big generic box. If you've been together a while, add something she'll keep, like a piece she'll actually wear.

Pick by what she's into

Her usual order is the best clue. What she gets at a café, the dessert she always picks and what she wears on weekends tell you more than any gift list.

How big to go

How long you've been together changes the size of the gift, not the flavor.

  • Just started dating: one bar and a two-line note. It says "I thought of you" without making a big statement.
  • Together a while: a bar plus something she'll keep, like a piece she'll actually wear. Make the note longer, with one memory you share.
  • Living together: a few bars in different flavors to share, with the night planned around them. Dinner at home, a movie, dessert on the couch.

Make it count

  • Write the note. Two or three sentences about something specific beat any printed card.
  • Order early. Valentine's Day is always February 14, and anything made to order needs extra time.
  • Hand it to her in person, at a good moment, instead of leaving it on the counter.
