Valentine's Day

What should I get my boyfriend for Valentine's Day?

Get him something picked for what he already likes, and say why in a short note. A lot of guys rarely get gifts, so a thoughtful one lands hard. A really good chocolate bar in a flavor that fits him, or something he'll wear every day, beats a gadget he didn't ask for.

Pick by what he's into

Look at what he already reaches for: how he takes his coffee, the snack he grabs at the register, the shirt he wears to death.

How big to go

How long you've been together changes the size of the gift, not what he likes.

  • Just started dating: one bar and a funny note. Hold off on clothes until you know his size and style.
  • Together a while: something he'll wear plus something to eat. Check the tag on his favorite shirt to get the size right.
  • Living together: a few bars to split, and make an evening of it. His favorite dinner, a movie, dessert at home.

Make it count

  • Say why you chose it. "You always steal my dark chocolate, so here's your own" is the whole card.
  • Order early. Valentine's Day is always February 14, and anything made to order needs extra time.
  • If he says he doesn't want anything, he means don't make a fuss. Go small and specific, and give it when it's just the two of you.
