Mother's Day

What should I get my mom for Mother's Day?

Give her something that's about her, not the house: a treat in her favorite flavor that she'd never buy herself, something soft to wear, and a card in your own handwriting. In the US, Mother's Day is the second Sunday in May. The note that says what she's done for you is what most moms keep.

Pick by what she loves

Moms buy the snacks everyone else likes and save the good stuff for guests. Pick the one thing that's only for her.

What else she'll want

  • A mom with young kids: an hour of quiet. Take bedtime, and hand her the treat on the way out.
  • A mom whose kids have grown: a visit or a call, and the card in your handwriting.
  • A grandma: let the grandkids sign the card or add a drawing. That's the part that goes on the fridge.
  • If the kids are picking: let them choose the flavor, even if it's not what you'd pick.

Make it count

  • Write the card. Thank her for one specific thing.
  • Plan ahead. Order early, and allow extra time for anything made to order.
  • Give her the day. Take something off her plate, and give the gift when she can enjoy it.
